Electric-car sales are spreading across more brands. Buyers should read the shift through service reach, charging support and resale confidence, not rankings alone.

September 2026 EV Sales: What the Changing Market Means for Buyers
ACApni CarsNewsroom report

India's electric passenger-vehicle market became more competitive in September 2026, with established EV makers facing stronger volume from newer products. Kia moving ahead of Maruti Suzuki for fifth place attracted attention, but a one-month ranking is less important to buyers than the broader pattern: credible EV choices are no longer concentrated under one badge.

What changed in September?

Recent market reporting shows fresh launches helping more manufacturers participate meaningfully in electric-car sales. Tata and JSW MG remain important volume players, while Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia have expanded buyer choice across different price points and body styles.

Monthly registration numbers can move with dispatch timing, fleet orders and launch supply. They should be read as direction, not a reliability table.

Why a wider market helps buyers

  • More competition puts pressure on prices and standard equipment.
  • Battery warranties and charging packages become easier to compare.
  • Used-car buyers gain more choice, helping the resale market mature.
  • Dealers and workshops have a stronger reason to invest in EV training.

Sales rank is not service quality

A high-volume brand can offer a larger service network, but local capability varies. Ask the workshop whether it has high-voltage-trained technicians, diagnostic tools and a process for battery-related cases. Speak to owners in your city rather than assuming the national ranking describes local support.

Check charging beyond the brochure

Confirm whether home-charger hardware and installation are included, the cable length, sanctioned-load requirement and apartment permissions. For public charging, examine the routes you actually use. Charger count alone does not reveal reliability, connector availability or queues.

Battery warranty deserves a line-by-line comparison

Compare years, kilometres, minimum state-of-health terms and exclusions. Also check warranty transferability for the next owner. A longer headline warranty is less useful if important conditions are difficult to establish.

What buyers should take from the numbers

The market is becoming healthier because buyers can shortlist on product fit rather than accepting the only available EV in a price band. Still, purchase decisions should be based on realistic range, charging access, insurance, service and total price. A monthly sales chart is supporting context, not the deciding factor.
