Dealer quotations become confusing because several transactions are folded into one page: the vehicle, registration, insurance, accessories, a loan and sometimes an exchange. The fix is simple but takes discipline: split every quote into matching lines before looking at the total.

The clean quote template
| Line item | Compare directly? | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ex-showroom price | Yes | Exact variant, model year and colour |
| Registration and statutory charges | Yes | Same address and city |
| Insurance | Only with equal cover | IDV, add-ons, deductible and insurer |
| Accessories | Keep separate | Whether they are optional and individually priced |
| Finance | Keep separate | Loan amount, rate, tenure and fees |
Insurance is a product, not a compulsory bundle
Look beyond the premium. Compare the insurer, insured declared value, zero-depreciation cover, consumables, engine protection, roadside assistance and deductibles. A lower premium with lighter cover is a different purchase, not an automatic saving.
Do the finance math outside the vehicle quote
Write down the down payment, actual loan amount, interest rate, tenure, processing fee and total payable amount. A long tenure may make the monthly EMI look comfortable while increasing the overall cost. If an insurance or accessory bundle is being financed, its interest belongs in the comparison too.
Before payment
- Ask which amount is refundable and which is not.
- Do not allow registration before the allotted car is inspected.
- Match the VIN on the invoice, insurance and vehicle.
- Keep all discounts and exchange conditions in the final quotation.
A transparent dealer will welcome an itemised comparison. The best deal is the one that remains best after every optional line is exposed.
