BH Series Number Plate in India: Eligibility, Tax Cycle and the Questions to Ask Before Delivery
ACApni CarsNewsroom report

A BH-series registration mark is meant to reduce one ownership headache for people who move between States or Union Territories: assigning a new registration mark after relocation. It is not a premium plate and it is not a benefit every new-car buyer can choose. Treat it as a document-and-employment decision before the dealer raises the registration file.

Who can consider BH registration

MoRTH introduced the Bharat series for eligible non-transport vehicles. The official framework covers defence personnel, Central and State government employees, employees of Central or State PSUs, and private-sector employees whose organisation has offices in four or more States or UTs. The option is voluntary. A private-sector applicant needs the prescribed working certificate; a government applicant uses official identity or service documentation. Ask the dealer and registering authority to confirm the current checklist for your State before invoicing.

Why the tax cycle matters

For a BH-series vehicle, motor-vehicle tax is levied electronically for two years or in multiples of two, rather than as one long state-registration payment. The original rules set tax bands by invoice price excluding GST, with a diesel addition and an EV reduction. The amount you actually see can depend on the current rule position and your vehicle details, so request a written computation instead of relying on a social-media calculator.

Delivery-day checklist

  • Confirm that the vehicle is a non-transport vehicle and that you meet the eligibility route.
  • Check the employer certificate or official ID before the registration application is started.
  • Ask for the tax calculation, the payment period and the next due date in writing.
  • Keep the acknowledgement, invoice, insurance and registration record together.
  • If finance is involved, ask what consent or NOC may be needed for a later conversion or transfer.

What BH does not change

Insurance, roadworthiness, service support and traffic obligations do not become simpler merely because the plate says BH. The practical advantage is interstate continuity of the registration mark for an eligible owner. If your job and residence are stable in one State, a normal registration can remain the simpler path.

Read the MoRTH BH-series notification and the later amendment before deciding.
