2026 Maruti Dzire CNG Automatic: Does the AGS Make Sense for City Buyers?

Maruti now pairs the Dzire's factory CNG system with a five-speed AGS. Here is what the new combination solves, what it does not, and what to check on a test drive.

2026 Maruti Dzire CNG Automatic: Does the AGS Make Sense for City Buyers?
ACApni CarsNewsroom report

For years, the practical Dzire buyer had to make an awkward choice: take the cheaper-running factory CNG car with a clutch pedal, or choose a petrol automatic for easier stop-start traffic. Maruti Suzuki's September 2026 introduction of an automatic S-CNG Dzire changes that equation. It does not turn the car into a different kind of automatic, though. The new combination uses a five-speed Auto Gear Shift transmission, commonly called an AMT, with the manufacturer's 1.2-litre Z12E CNG powertrain. Whether that is your ideal commuter depends less on a brochure mileage figure than on your commute, access to CNG and tolerance for an AMT's shifting character.

What Maruti has actually announced

Maruti introduced automatic S-CNG versions of the Swift, Dzire and Baleno under its Auto Green Mission. Its official September 2026 announcement says the Dzire automatic S-CNG has a certified fuel-efficiency figure of 36.47 km/kg and an introductory ex-showroom starting price of Rs 8,53,100. Both numbers deserve context: the efficiency is a laboratory certification, and the published price was the launch starting figure, not a promise about your city's current on-road bill or every variant. Ask the dealer for a dated quotation and the exact variant code.

The engine is Maruti's Z12E 1.2-litre unit with Dual VVT and idle start-stop. The AGS is a five-speed automated manual: an actuator handles clutch and gear changes, and a driver can request manual shifts without a clutch pedal. That is more specific than simply calling the car “automatic.” The mechanical arrangement helps explain why it may feel different from a conventional torque-converter automatic during a slow crawl or a brisk overtake. Do not assume the CNG automatic drives identically to the petrol AGS just because the selector looks familiar.

The problem this version solves

Consider a buyer who travels across a large city every weekday and can refill at a reliable station near home or work. The manual CNG car might keep fuel spending down, but frequent clutch use can be tiring. An AGS removes that task while keeping factory-fitted CNG hardware. The value is strongest when both parts of that proposition matter to you. If your annual running is modest, or the nearest CNG pump regularly takes a long detour, the extra purchase cost and refuelling time deserve the same weight as the certified consumption figure.

Maruti's announcement also confirms the CNG system is factory integrated, with an intelligent injection system, stainless-steel pipes and joints, an integrated wiring harness and a filling microswitch. Those are the manufacturer's stated engineering features, not a reason to skip normal inspections. Keep the CNG service schedule and cylinder paperwork with the car, and have work on the fuel system performed through an appropriately qualified workshop. A factory CNG model should not be confused with an aftermarket conversion when comparing insurance, warranty or resale documentation.

Where an AMT can feel different

An automated manual still changes ratios. When the system disengages and re-engages the clutch, a brief interruption in drive can be noticeable, particularly if you keep a heavy foot on the accelerator. Smoothness is subjective, and no brochure can tell you how it will feel in your actual traffic. Test the car in the same sort of crawl, flyover climb and stop-start junction you meet every day. Pay attention to the pause between first and second, the response to a sudden gap in traffic and how easily you can settle at parking speed.

Do a second run with a passenger in the rear seat. The person at the wheel may unconsciously smooth a shift by easing the accelerator; a passenger is often quicker to notice a head-nod. If a salesperson offers only a short drive on an empty road, arrange a longer route before paying a booking amount. Also try the manual-selection function on an incline, while following the instructions in the owner's manual. The aim is to learn how the car responds, not to provoke a gearbox fault or imitate an acceleration test.

Certified economy is a starting point, not a monthly bill

The 36.47 km/kg figure comes from the certified test cited in Maruti's release. Your consumption can change with traffic, load, air-conditioning, gradient, driving style and the amount of petrol operation. A useful cost comparison starts with your own monthly distance, realistic refill access and the current prices you actually pay. Convert the cost of each fuel to rupees per kilometre using observed consumption, then add the purchase-price difference across the number of years you expect to keep the car. Avoid calculations that treat a certification number as a guarantee.

For a household car, also count the practical cost of stopping for fuel. A CNG queue on your commute may add minutes repeatedly; a station next to your regular route may make the same choice easy. Check the boot with your luggage rather than relying on a litre figure from a petrol variant. A sedan can hide an awkwardly shaped usable area around CNG hardware. Test the stroller, airport cases or weekly bags that actually travel with you, and check whether your preferred variant includes the equipment you want.

Compare the right three cars

Ask for on-road quotations for the Dzire CNG manual, CNG AGS and petrol AGS in comparable equipment grades. That is a cleaner comparison than placing a well-equipped CNG automatic beside a base petrol car. Separate ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, accessories and any finance charges. Compare the fuel-saving estimate with the difference in purchase outlay, but do not turn the result into a universal break-even promise. Your kilometres, pump prices and city traffic will change it.

The manual CNG remains a strong option for someone who does substantial running and does not mind changing gears. The petrol AGS avoids CNG refilling logistics and may suit a low-mileage household. The CNG AGS offers a combination that previously was missing for this model: two pedals and factory CNG. None automatically wins on every buyer's spreadsheet. If a dealer proposes an alternative trim because the one you want has a waiting period, repeat the equipment and on-road-price comparison from scratch.

What to ask before booking

  • Is the quoted car specifically the factory Dzire S-CNG AGS, and which exact trim and model year will be invoiced?
  • What is the dated, itemised on-road quote including insurance and optional accessories?
  • Can you drive this powertrain in traffic, on a mild incline and with a passenger?
  • Can your usual luggage fit around the CNG installation?
  • Where are convenient CNG stations on your regular route, and what are their opening hours?
  • What does the current warranty and service booklet say for the CNG system and AGS?

The presence of automatic shifts does not remove the need to check the basics: seating position, visibility, braking feel, parking access and rear-seat comfort. If this is a shared family car, every regular driver should try it. One driver may prize its ease in traffic while another dislikes the pause during shifts. Those differences matter more than a single online verdict.

Who should shortlist it?

The Dzire CNG AGS is most persuasive for a high-use city buyer with convenient CNG access who wants to retire the clutch pedal. It is less obvious for a low-mileage owner, someone whose route lacks dependable pumps, or a driver who expects the uninterrupted pull of a different automatic design. Maruti's announcement establishes what the car is and its certified figure; the test drive and the written quote establish whether it works for you.
